Since the group’s previous album release in 2022 they won a Josie Award (“Living Waters”), a Grizzly Award (“Bottom of the Barrel”), had three Top 10 radio hits, and made several “Song of the Year” and “Album of the Year” lists (Christian Music Weekly, JesusFreakHideout.com, RadioU, Crossroad Radio, Some Sort of Rock Show, The Antidote, ChristianRock.net, etc).

With canons blasting right out of the gate, this heavy grunge-inspired song launches into the perfect head-banging riff – no doubt invented to cause the listener to wonder if they’re going to “break their neck.” The groove-heavy riffs and rhythms continue until the song opens into a spacious chorus hook that creates an infectious, melody-laced atmosphere, reminiscent of the quirky, rough-around-the-edges, hit giants of the 90s like Nirvana and Radiohead in their more Beatlesque moments.

“Don’t break your neck trying to run from the gallows

You’re bringing the end of the world on yourself.”

~ Lyrics from “Neck Breaker”

Lyrically, this song is a segment taken from the concept album’s larger fiction story of an evil band of pirates who sets sail on a sinister mission, dismissing the prophetic warnings of an old sailor on the pier who warns of a worse fate for them than the gallows if they keep their intended course. The fiction story – keeping with the model of Rusty Shipp’s other concept albums – is ultimately a masked philosophical message warning of people living their lives in a self-inflicted apocalypse.

Rusty Shipp is a Nashville-based rock band that combines Beatlesque melodies, surf and grunge riffs, with story-based philosophical lyrics and art to create Nautical Rock ‘n’ Roll.
