For it is God who is working in you, enabling you both to desire and to work out His good purpose. – Philippians 2:13 (HCSB)
Have you noticed that a lot of the time we want things ‘now’. We want our teachers to give us less homework, ‘now’. We want our parents to get off our case, ‘now’. We want our lives and our relationships to get better, ‘now’. We live in a world where things often happen fast and we are so used to instant downloads and results and action that it’s sometimes hard for us to be patient and wait for things to change.
A lot of the things in God’s word require a process. Maybe you pray for something and you don’t get the results to your prayer right away. You have to wait and wait and wait and it seems like it’s taking forever. The waiting time is often the hardest part.
But it’s in the times of waiting that God helps us develop character in our lives. You might be waiting for that special relationship that will turn into marriage. In the waiting time, God can try to build character into your life. He might challenge you to get closer to him or to build successful habits.
Waiting isn’t always comfortable, but it’s good for us. It’s in those times of waiting on the promises of God that we develop godly character. Today if you’ve been waiting for change for a while, don’t give up. God is working in your life. Through this situation, he’s going to build character into your life.
