Pipe Bomb is back with their new single, “Hate Club,” a song that channels their chaotic metalcore roots. With odd time signatures, grating guitars, and frantic aggression throughout, Pipe Bomb combines elements of late 00s metalcore with mathcore and modern hardcore, capturing the nervous energy of bands like The Chariot and Norma Jean, but with a fresh, accessible slant.
With enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end, Pipe Bomb proves that “Hate Club” is some of their best work to date.
Lyrically, “Hate Club” is a seething commentary on the irony of tolerance in America’s political landscape. While many claim to welcome all kinds of people with open arms, that sentiment seems to only apply as a blanket statement for likeminded demographics. When nuanced individuals challenge their view, their illusion of tolerance and love collapses.
“Social media has taught me that, a lot of times, empathy is a competition,” says vocalist Mitchell Layton. “People want to be seen as the most loving, accepting person in the room, but it’s not for the right reasons. It’s all talk.”
“When push comes to shove,” continues Layton, “there’s no real love there. It’s just social currency. As soon as someone disagrees, you’ll get shunned. They’ll eat their own.”
“Hate Club” exposes the loathing behind the facade of love, showing that many people confuse a political stance of tolerance with the actionable evidence of real care.
